Red Dot

about

Ambient Electronica with drum and percussion groove, deep bass, electronic drums, synth and keyboards (MiniMoog, Prophet-6, U-he DIVA etc.), voice samples and sound fx. I composed this to honor the brilliant scientist and author Carl Sagan, and I made the special mix for my daughter Anjas wedding (the same day as this EP is released) because when I first shared the beautiful reading "Pale Blue Dot" by Sagan with Anja, she told me that she wanted to use this in her wedding, but some other voices in the family didn't like the idea enough. By composing this track, I want to give Anja some support - and show that we think alike! We have open and free minds, and we trust in facts rather than myths.

About the video:
Today (this video was released on September 11, 2018), it is seventeen years since the brutal terror attack on the World Trade Center on Manhattan in New York. When we look at the human history, it's a never ending story of brutal violence and suffering. In this video - based on my composition "Red Dot" (released on Homeless Balloon's EP "Red Dot" in 2018) - I have picked some of the important points in history seen in a broad perspective. We can ask if human life needs to be like this, or if there is any hope for change? Personally, I don't believe in political solutions only. We need a change in the way we look at ourselves and each other. We need a change in our minds. Politics is still about power. Politicians are supposed to be strong and powerful, and we easily accept their violence because we think that "violence is sometimes necessary". Based on the discoveries and research of science - and also our experience with fanatic religion and extreme political views - it shouldn't be difficult to draw the same conclusions as Carl Sagan did in his essay "Pale, Blue Dot", which inspired me to compose "Red Dot". I asked for permission to use Carl Sagan's voice recording of his Essay, but his wife Ann Druyan responded politely that she and her husband always wanted to protect the copyright and use of this valuable recording. I respect that!

Here are som quotes by Carl Sagan:

"It is far better to grasp the universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring." (Carl Sagan)

"Every one of us is, in the cosmic perspective, precious. If a human disagrees with you, let him live. In a hundred billion galaxies, you will not find another." (Carl Sagan)

"Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the universe, are challenged by this point of pale light. Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark." (Carl Sagan)
